Were You Told You Are Not a Candidate for LASIK?

Published by Lance Kugler, MD on January 16, 2018

“Am I a candidate for LASIK?” is a common question we hear at Kugler Vision. Have you been told in the past that you are not a good candidate for LASIK? Well, you may be a good candidate for another laser vision correction procedure that will give you the same results as LASIK: clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Using the most advanced technology, Kugler Vision is the first practice in the region to specialize in all seven refractive procedures available today to help you achieve clear vision. When your eyes mature, typically between the ages 18 and 21, your eye prescription becomes stable, and laser vision correction is an effective and long-lasting alternative to glasses and contact lenses.

LASIK is the most common laser vision correction procedure, but if you are not a good candidate for LASIK, you may be a good candidate for SMILE, ASA, or ICL.

Who Can Have LASIK?

LASIK reshapes the cornea, the front surface of the eye, to change its focusing power, resulting in clear vision. LASIK can correct these common vision conditions:

  • Astigmatism
  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)

LASIK is the most common laser vision correction surgery. Kugler Vision’s ophthalmologist, Lance Kugler, MD, had LASIK himself. Read Dr. Kugler’s vision correction story here.

Who Can Have SMILE?

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) is a laser vision correction procedure that changes the shape of the cornea by using a laser to gently create a thin, contact-lens-shaped layer just beneath the surface of the eye, which is removed through a small opening. SMILE is a great option for many people who have been told they are not a candidate for LASIK. SMILE can correct:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)

Who Can Have ASA?

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) is a laser vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to improve vision. ASA is another excellent vision correction option and is commonly performed on patients who are not LASIK candidates for a variety of reasons, such as having thin corneas. ASA can correct:

  • Astigmatism
  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)

Who Can Have ICL?

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is a removable lens implant that is a common alternative to LASIK. ICL can correct:

  • Moderate to high myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Astigmatism

Kugler Vision’s very own optometrist Mollie Hiatt, OD, had ICL. Read Dr. Hiatt’s full vision correction story here.
