Tips for Researching LASIK

Looking at options for crisp, clear vision outside of wearing glasses and contacts is exciting (hooray for clear vision without barriers!), but it’s also an overload of information that can create a speed bump in your search progress. It may feel daunting when you type in “LASIK” on your search bar and are instantly greeted with hundreds of thousands of results. But don’t worry! We are here to help you with three simple tips to simplify collecting and fact-checking LASIK information so your research can be a breeze.

Research is a great first step when considering any procedure, and we encourage it for all of our prospective patients looking into laser vision correction. Having an idea of what to expect and finding questions to ask at your visit can add a great amount of confidence to your LASIK journey.

These essential tips are great to keep in mind during your online LASIK research.

Collect Valid Information

The internet is undoubtedly an excellent tool for searching for everything and anything if you know where to look. Make sure you stick to information from websites that end in “.org” or “.edu,”  or sites that are specific to a certain practice when searching around for medical information. Avoid sites that have pop-ups, ask for your personal information more than once, or have an overload of sponsored content – it is often easy for credible information to become mixed in with opinion-based content. Sites like The American Refractive Surgery Council (ARSC) and The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) are full of useful refractive surgery information.

Browse Reviews

Reviews are essential when picking the perfect place for anything! Reading what other patients have to say about a doctor, their procedure, and overall experience adds a lot to your LASIK research. Notice if a business has thoughtful, consistent, highly rated reviews and observe if there are inconsistencies or publicly upset patient reviews. That is often an indicator that the business is not patient-focused. Facebook, Google, and Yelp are all great sources for real patient reviews.

Understand That There are Seven Different Types of Vision Correction Procedures

A lot can be discovered on the internet and it can be easy to make a self-diagnosis based on your findings. While taking a LASIK self-test is a great resource for getting an idea of your refractive surgery candidacy, it is important to keep in mind that a doctor will be able to see your eyes in-depth and understand your vision goals and needs, which can lead to the recommendation of a different vision correction procedure.  There are actually seven different forms of modern vision correction, and LASIK is one of these seven. That is why it is important to go to a provider who specializes in more than one or two forms of vision correction. When evaluating a LASIK provider, ask “Do you specialize in all seven forms of vision correction?”.

To fully understand the laser vision correction procedure that is the best fit for you, it is always recommended to visit with a doctor. If you have questions regarding LASIK or would like to schedule a consultation to find out if you’re a candidate, please contact us today at 402.558.2211.
