Jason’s LASIK Story: From Couch Potato to Marathoner
“For 30 years, I had to deal with the discomfort of blurry vision, slipping glasses, foggy glasses, as well as cracked and broken glasses. Growing up, my parents and I had spent thousands of dollars on pair after pair of glasses. I was ready for a change.
LASIK forever changed my life!
When I went in for my LASIK procedure, I weighed 265 pounds and was dealing with high blood pressure, borderline cholesterol, depression and anxiety, and sleep apnea. Needless to say, for someone in their early 30’s my health was not heading in the right direction. With diabetes running in my family the doctors warned me that I needed to make some changes.
Upon completion of LASIK, my children reminded me of a promise that I had made to them. That if I got LASIK that I would learn how to swim. Well that started me on a path that has since completely changed my life.
After LASIK, I started to feel better about myself and I started running. Thanks to not having to deal with glasses I wasn’t bothered by the sweat sliding my glasses down, dripping on my lenses, and on sunny days my sunglasses helped me not have to squint into the sun. I loved it. The pounds started coming off, and I started running longer and longer. I entered and completed my first marathon a year and a half later. And yes, I upheld my promise to my children and I am learning how to swim. In fact, thanks to LASIK I have a new goal! I want to compete in and finish an Ironman event. Certainly something that I would never would have considered with glasses.
I am also much healthier. 176 pounds and down from a 42 waist size to a size 34! Also, my heart test results were outstanding. I no longer had high blood pressure, my cholesterol levels were perfect, and I was no longer at a high risk for diabetes.
Thanks to Dr. Kugler and his staff my life has been forever transformed by choosing to have LASIK! You know they say you don’t realize how much you miss something until it’s gone. I didn’t realize how much wearing glasses affected my self-image, my self-confidence, and my life in general until they were gone. Now, I see clearly and my future looks fun, full of adventure, and most importantly, healthy.”

Dr. Kugler is one of the original founders of the Refractive Surgery Alliance, an international organization comprised of over 350 of the world’s leading vision correction surgeons; he also served as its first president. In 2019, Dr. Kugler was selected as a TEDx speaker, and delivered a talk in Omaha about the worldwide epidemic of nearsightedness and refractive solutions. Dr. Kugler is an Associate Professor of Refractive Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Truhlsen Eye Institute, has been published in many medical journals, and participates in numerous clinical studies to advance the field of vision correction surgery. Additionally, Dr. Kugler is proud to be a Board Certified Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences. Dr. Kugler and his wife are proud parents to five active kids. When he has a spare moment, he enjoys skiing, tennis, travel, and fine coffee.
