The new Apple Vision Pro is setting the tech world abuzz, and scores of fans are getting onboard with the $3,500 device. The mixed-reality headset promises a veritable feast for the senses, blending virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences in one device.
The Vision Pro is equipped with dual 4K displays, one for each eye, and is designed to allow users to switch between VR and AR modes. However, there is something you need to know about the “vision” part of the Vision Pro: The headset may fit over your eyes in your field of vision, but it can’t fix your vision. Before you fork out thousands of dollars on a new device, here’s what you need to consider.
What is Apple Vision Pro?
Marketed as both a productivity tool and entertainment device, the Vision Pro can mirror a Mac’s screen for multitasking, run iOS apps and provide an immersive experience for streaming content and gaming.
With the ability to view spatial videos and enhanced games, the headset is designed to deliver stunning visuals to Apple enthusiasts. But the user still needs to be able to clearly see what is delivered to the headset. That means people with contact lenses and prescription glasses will still have to correct for refractive errors while using the headset.
How does Apple address vision correction with the Vision Pro?
As with other VR headsets on the market, the Apple Vision Pro does not accommodate eyeglasses. Instead of wearing corrective eyewear under the headset, the user will need to purchase a separate vision correction insert that attaches to the inside of the headset.
Naturally, these vision correction inserts will cost you: For $99 more, you can purchase Vision Pro-compatible reading lenses; $149 will get you prescription lenses. Both attachment types will require a prescription from an eye doctor.
Will all eyewear prescriptions work with Vision Pro?
No. The Apple Vision Pro can be fitted with Zeiss lenses that magnetically attach to the headset to correct refractive errors, but these lenses only support a specific prescription range. There are also limitations when it comes to certain types of contact lenses and eye conditions:
- Vision Pro should not be used with hard contact lenses, as it may negatively impact the user experience.
- The device is compatible with most soft contact lenses; however, it should not be used with cosmetic lenses.
- Certain medical conditions affecting eye movement or alignment may affect the device’s eye tracking.
- Individuals who have had monovision corrective surgery should consult with an eye care provider. Your eye doctor can provide a prescription that works within the supported prescription range for Apple Vision Pro.
What’s the ideal way to handle vision problems for Apple Vision Pro?
VR/AR headsets are most effective, comfortable and enjoyable for people with 20/20 or better vision without the need for prescription glasses and contact lenses.
