Eye Exams for Children of Omaha
One of the most important tests students will take this year won’t be in the classroom – it’s their eye exam!
While amazing and beneficial in many areas of life, today’s increasing use of technology at home and in school has a downside– it takes a toll on the vision and eye health of children. Technology enhances kids’ learning opportunities and provides entertainment; unfortunately, the long-term effects on children’s eyes are not yet fully known. It is more essential than ever to have their eyes thoroughly examined!
650 Omaha Public School students were provided with free eye exams and glasses Monday, May 9 – Friday, May 13.
At Kugler Vision, we recognize the need occurring in Omaha and are proud to provide vision care to children a part of Building Healthy Futures. Building Healthy Futures is a nonprofit that heads 18 Omaha area groups to improve the health of children in low-income households.
Kugler Vision was proud to provide the children a part of “Building Healthy Futures” vision care that included education, screening, diagnosing, and treatment. More than 100 students were screened each day. These students were chosen to participate after preliminary tests winter 2015 showed that they were in need of vision care.
Students who needed vision exams had barriers such as lack of insurance, transportation or language. The free exams given gave these students the opportunity to have their vision tested and were given the correct prescription glasses that they needed. Vision is important to a child’s education. Vision and learning go hand in hand.
Research shows 80% of learning is dependent upon a child’s vision and 75% of the school day is spent in visual activities. Good vision is essential for students of all ages in order to reach their full academic potential. One in four children have undiagnosed vision problems which interfere with learning. We were proud to help provide the needed vision care to children in Omaha and fully support and stand behind Building Healthy Futures vision and mission.
