This Summer, Free Yourself from Limitations with LASIK
Published by on August 3, 2015
The summer season is certainly one to look forward to in Nebraska. BBQ’s, festivals, and farmers’ markets are in full swing. Unfortunately for many of us, this time of year also brings dreaded seasonal allergies, something that is especially unpleasant for contact lens wearers. This summer, don’t let your activities be affected by irritated, watery eyes. Free yourself from these annoyances and consider LASIK at Kugler Vision in Omaha, NE!
Contacts and the 4 seasons
If you wear contact lenses, every time of year brings its own set of issues. In winter and autumn, dry air from heating and lack of humidity make wearing your lenses uncomfortable. Spring time is no different. The pollen and allergens in the environment from blooming spring flowers and trees can make your eyes watery and irritated.
In the summer, the cycle starts all over again. Itchy red eyes from pollen and ragweed result in many trips to the drugstore to purchase over-the-counter or prescription medications for your allergies. Ironically, antihistamines and allergy medication cause MORE dryness and play a role in your discomfort. You are constantly removing your contacts any chance you get and using eye drops daily to keep your eyes moist and comfortable.
Why are contact lenses so uncomfortable in the summer?
Of course, contacts are a great alternative to wearing glasses, but they come with their own set of limitations. Dryness is exacerbated with contact lens wear. Without the proper amount of tears, your eyes cannot wash away debris, pollen, and dirt. Even worse, pollen and other allergens also get caught between the inside of your lenses and your cornea.
Unfortunately, no allergy medication can give you the comfort you need if there is an allergen trapped under your lens! If you’re one of the many contact lens wearers that use contacts every day, you are further contributing to your discomfort. By wearing your lenses every day, you are limiting the amount of oxygen that reaches your cornea. Our eyes stay healthy and disease-free only if they get the correct amount of oxygen. Should you over wear your lenses, forget to take them out at night, or neglect to clean them properly, bacteria can grow– creating eye infections and potentially sight-threatening conditions.
It’s time to get rid of the re-wetting drops, cleaners, and all the maintenance of contact lenses. If your allergies persist, at least you won’t have to deal with the double discomfort of contacts and allergies. Free yourself from these limitations this summer and consider LASIK surgery!
Limitations of Wearing Contact Lenses or Glasses in Summer
Aside from the allergy factor, contact lenses and glasses simply limit what you can do in the summertime and can curb your fun. If you are planning a beach vacation, you can’t go in the ocean or the pool with contact lenses. If you would love to learn how to scuba dive or snorkel, that is out of the question. You can’t wear your contacts in the water, and you can’t see without your glasses. That’s why LASIK allows you a life without barriers, and then you can scuba diving!
If camping, hiking, or biking is your idea of a relaxing summer day, think about how much more you would enjoy those outdoor activities without the restrictions of contacts and glasses. Not to mention the convenience of simply waking up in the morning and getting on with your day, rather than fumbling around with your lens case and solution, or trying to locate your glasses cleaner.
