Published by on October 8, 2025
On KETV Omaha’s Very Local Business Spotlight, Lauren Taylor sits down with Dr. Kugler of Kugler Vision to discuss refractive lens exchange, a vision correction procedure designed for people in their 40s and 50s who are experiencing age-related changes in their eyesight. Dr. Kugler explains how this procedure differs from cataract surgery, who makes an ideal candidate, and the various lens options available to patients seeking to improve both their near and distance vision while preventing future cataracts.
Introduction
Lauren Taylor: Get ready for another very local business spotlight. I’m Lauren Taylor and today we’re at Kugler Vision talking to Dr. Kugler about refractive lens exchange. Dr. Kugler, what is refractive lens exchange?
What is Refractive Lens Exchange?
Dr. Kugler: Our eyes have natural lenses that are able to see far and close. And as we get older, we lose the ability to do that. And so refractive lens exchange replaces our natural lens with an artificial lens that’s able to see far and close.
Ideal Candidates
Lauren Taylor: And who is a good candidate for refractive lens exchange?
Dr. Kugler: Well, we all lose the ability to do that in our 40s and 50s. So, we start thinking about refractive lens exchange in people typically in their late 40s to mid-50s.
Comparison to Cataract Surgery
Lauren Taylor: And how is this different from cataract surgery?
Dr. Kugler: Well, cataract surgery is very similar in the sense that we’re replacing the cataract with a similar lens. So, everybody gets a new lens in their eye as they get older. The question is, are you going to do it before you develop cataracts or after you develop cataracts? The nice thing about refractive lens exchange is we fix far vision, close vision, astigmatism, and we prevent cataracts from ever developing.
Lens Options Available
Lauren Taylor: And which kinds of lenses are available with refractive lens exchange?
Dr. Kugler: So, we have lenses that can fix far vision, close vision, astigmatism. We have lenses that are adjustable that we can adjust after the procedure. So, there’s lots of options and we customize it to each individual patient.
Closing
Lauren Taylor: Dr. Kugler, thank you so much for your time today.
Dr. Kugler: Thank you.
