How Long Does it Take to Recover From LASIK?

At Kugler Vision in Omaha, our patients often wonder how long they can expect to recover from LASIK. We all have busy lives: working a full time job, taking care of kids and driving them to and from school, checking our emails, and much more! You want LASIK but may be concerned about the recovery period. No need to worry, the recovery period is quick and greatly enhances the quality of your life!
LASIK Recovery
For the first few hours after LASIK, the eyes often have some mild soreness from the procedure. Lubricating eye drops and Tylenol are typically enough to counteract any discomfort. Eye drops are prescribed to all of our patients, which should be taken at the correct times listed for you on provided directions. We also provide some light goggles to help protect your eyes while you sleep, and we recommend that you use these goggles while sleeping for the first week after surgery. You vision recovers quickly.
On the day following LASIK, most patients are able to drive to Kugler Vision all by themselves for their one day exam. Most patients are able to return to work or regular activities following their one day appointment. You are able to shower after LASIK; however, it’s important to not get water in your eyes and to avoid rubbing eyes after LASIK. There is commonly a haze, or “fog” in the vision for a few days, which resolves after a few weeks. Patients return one month after their procedure for a follow-up exam.
Does LASIK Ever Need to be Repeated?
Ultimately, the results of any surgery depend upon the human body’s ability to heal, and every person heals in a slightly different way. Eyes typically stabilize around three to six months after LASIK surgery. At that time our doctors determine whether your eye has healed as predicted or if an enhancement would help.
