Discover EVO ICL: The Implantable Contact Lens on KMTV Omaha Extra

Published by Kugler Vision on July 3, 2025

Are you nearsighted or astigmatic but told you’re not a LASIK candidate? Implantable lenses have been transforming lives for over 30 years, and today’s advancement—EVO ICL—offers a permanent, high-quality alternative to glasses, contacts, and corneal laser surgery. In this segment on KMTV Omaha Extra, Drew Dickson, MD will introduce you to EVO ICL and explain why so many patients are choosing this cutting-edge solution.

What Is EVO ICL?

EVO ICL stands for “EVO Implantable Collamer® Lens.” Unlike traditional contact lenses, EVO ICL is a biocompatible, soft lens that’s surgically placed inside the eye—“it’s like an implantable contact lens,” as Dr. Dixon puts it, “so you don’t actually feel it in the eye and you don’t have to replace it like a contact.” The lens sits between your natural lens and the iris, correcting nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism without altering the cornea’s shape.

Why EVO ICL Is a Game Changer

In our Omaha Extra segment, Dr. Dickson highlights three key benefits:

  1. Exceptional Vision Quality

“Out of any of the surgeries that we do, it tends to have the highest vision quality…because we don’t have to alter the normal shape of the eye at all”.
Patients often report crisp, high-contrast vision, even in low light—perfect for night driving or screen work.

  2. Rapid Recovery
Most EVO ICL recipients see 20/20 or better the very next day. As Dr. Dickson notes, “vision recovery…most patients are seeing 20/20 or better the next day after surgery”, making it a swift solution for busy lives.
  3. Broader Candidacy
Many individuals told they’re ineligible for LASIK—due to thin corneas, dry eye, or high prescriptions—find they’re ideal EVO ICL candidates. It expands the possibility of surgical vision correction to a wider population.

Who Should Consider EVO ICL?

  • Nearsighted patients (up to –20.0 D) who want freedom from glasses or contacts.
  • Astigmatic patients who need toric EVO ICL for precise correction.
  • Those unsuitable for corneal laser procedures due to thin corneas or ocular surface issues.

Because EVO ICL is fully reversible—unlike permanent corneal reshaping—it offers a flexible, long-term strategy for vision health.

Kary: Welcome back to Omaha Extra. I’m Kary Wurth, and today, we are visiting Kugler Vision. I’m in the surgical suite with Dr. Drew Dickson. He is a refractive surgeon. Thank you so much for having us in.

Dr. Dickson: Yeah. Thanks for being here. Good to have you.

Kary: Absolutely. So we’re learning about alternatives to LASIK, and one of those specifically is EV ICL, correct?

Dr. Dickson: Yes. That’s correct. Yes.

Kary: Okay. I said that right.

Dr. Dickson: You said it right. Yes.

Kary: Can you tell us what that is?

Dr. Dickson: Absolutely. So, a lot of people have never heard of the EVO ICL, but it’s something that’s been around that we’ve been using to fix people’s vision for over 30 years now. And so, you can think of the EVO ICL as being like an implantable contact lens. So it’s like a contact in that it fixes people’s vision. Unlike a contact, in that you don’t actually feel it in the eye, you don’t have to replace it like a contact, but really, really a great option for people looking to get out of glasses and contacts. Right now, in the United States, people who are nearsighted and have astigmatism can have this surgery done. There’s a lot of people out there who have been told by other eye doctors that they’re not good candidates for LASIK who tend to be really good candidates for the EVO ICL. So if you’re one of those people who has been told, “Oh, yeah, you can’t have LASIK.” You might be a great EVO ICL candidate as well.

Kary: Okay. And what are some of the benefits of EVO ICL?

Dr. Dickson: So, out of any of the surgeries that we do, it tends to have the highest vision quality just because we don’t have to alter the normal shape of the eye at all during the procedure. Out of anything that we do, it also has the highest patient satisfaction, just because of that high vision quality. It’s very quick visual recovery. Most patients are seeing 20/20 or better the next day after surgery, so it’s a really good option for people looking to get out of glasses and contacts.
