What is a “Retina Display” on Apple Devices?

The term “Retina display” is used by Apple to describe screens that have a higher pixel density than previous models. The terms Retina Display, Retina HD Display, and Retina 5K Display are used for several Apple products, including:

  • iPhone
  • iPod Touch
  • iPad
  • MacBook (2015 version)
  • MacBook Pro
  • iPad Mini
  • iPad Air
  • iMac

Why “Retina”?

The reason Apple calls it “retina” display is because the pixel density of the display exceeds the resolution display that is humanly possible. The resolution and pixel density is roughly 300 or more pixels per inch, which is so high that a person is unable to distinguish the individual pixels at a normal viewing distance.

The typical viewing distance differs depending on the device used. The newer device versions have even higher quality improvements than the previous. See the retina display comparisons between all of the iPhone models on Apple’s webpage.

Purpose

When Apple introduced the groundbreaking Retina Display, the company set a new standard in screen resolution. During the introduction of the iPhone 4 in 2010, Steve Jobs announced the device would have Retina Display. Retina display is an LCD that boasts a very high pixel density. Even with the same screen size, the Retina Display is packed with more pixels than the old standard screens.

The purpose of Retina display is for the screen to always look vibrant and highly detailed. When viewed on devices with Retina Display, images are very sharp and clear with no “jaggies” or pixelation. The difference is remarkable! Retina Display uses millions of compact pixels that improve viewing angles and enhance the color display, resulting in super high-resolution screens important for Smartphones and other small screen devices.

The Benefits of Retina Display:

  • reduces glare while maintaining clear color and quality
  • has a high contrast ratio, resulting in blacker blacks and whiter whites
  • handles everyday tasks and graphics as well as intensive creative apps
