What Is 20/20 Vision?

20/20 vision can be achieved by wearing glasses, contact lenses, or having laser vision correction. A common question we hear at Kugler Vision is “what does it mean to have 20/20 vision?” Simply put, 20/20 vision is the term used to describe when a person looks at an eye chart that is 20 feet away, and it appears 20 feet away.

If someone has 20/40 vision, an eye chart that’s 20 feet away appears 40 feet away from them. It is less clear to them than it should be at that distance. This person will most likely need to have their vision corrected in order to see clearly.

If someone has 20/15 vision (better than 20/20), that means an eye chart that is 20 feet away appears only 15 feet away from them. This person likely has had LASIK vision correction and is seeing in a clear and more natural way.

Now that you understand what the term 20/20 means, let’s look at vision as a whole. 20/20 measures how sharp vision is — but that’s only one piece of overall visual ability. To better understand what it means to have 20/20 vision, please watch the video below.
