Patient Focus: Bryce

Kugler Vision in Omaha, Nebraska provided LASIK vision correction to improve the quality of life for Bryce, a local man affected by paralysis, through the national program Focus on Independence. LASIK offers Bryce a more independent lifestyle.

An estimated one in 50 Americans lives with some form of paralysis. For those with physical limitations affecting the arms and hands, contact lenses and glasses add another level of frustrating complexity to the daily routine.

Meet Bryce

before and after lasik

Bryce, a 28-year-old man was born and raised in Alaska. He enjoys reading, outdoor sports and activities, such as boating. After the accident, he came to Omaha, NE to receive care.

He first heard about Kugler Vision from his friend, Joey, who also had LASIK at Kugler Vision through the Focus on Independence program. Joey encouraged Bryce to go to Kugler Vision. Byce had thought about LASIK before, but never made the time to check it out. Joey and his other friends are excited for Bryce because they loved their LASIK results and were happy they had laser vision correction done sooner rather than later.

Bryce has been wearing glasses since he was 15-years-old. Now, he is not able to take off his glasses or clean them. He even sleeps in his glasses, so he can wake up just being able to see clearly. Bryce says that he is ready for LASIK and is excited that he won’t have to sleep in his glasses anymore to wake up and see in the morning.

What Is Focus on Independence?

Focus on Independence is a nonprofit that seeks to improve the lives of people living with disability, who cannot use their arms or hands to handle glasses and contact lenses. The program was founded in 2003 and offers services nationwide. Participating surgeons provide surgical vision correction for these individuals, and with it, a new look at life.

When Bryce heard about Focus on Independence, he thought it was awesome that someone in Omaha is helping people. “It’s not something you find everyday. It’s really cool,” says Bryce.

A New View

Bryce was excited to find out that he was a good candidate for LASIK. August 2017, Lance Kugler, MD performed his procedure.
