Lance Kugler, MD Implants The First Extended-Range Tecnis Multifocal IOL in Nebraska

In February 2015, Lance Kugler, MD implanted the first extended-range Tecnis Multifocal in Nebraska. This Intraocular Lens (IOL) is similar to the standard Tecnis Multifocal but has better intermediate-range vision. It is available to a few select surgeons in the United States now and will be available to the general public in April 2015. IOL

What is the Tecnis Multifocal IOL?

The Tecnis multifocal family of IOLs, +4.0, +3.25, and +2.75, allows clinicians to provide patients with a full range of outstanding vision with enhanced performance at distances suited for each individual patient’s lifestyle. The higher the number, the closer the lens is able to focus. For example the +4.0 version can focus around 12 inches away, whereas the +2.75 is farther away, closer to where a computer screen may be. The +4.0 version has been available for a few years, and now the +3.25 and +2.75 are available to a handful of surgeons in the U.S.

Clinical Study Results

The clinical data presented are 6-month postoperative results from IDE prospective, multicenter, bilateral, open-label, evaluator-masked, modified-parallel group trial. A total of 445 subjects were enrolled and had one of the Tecnis multifocal IOLs implanted. Following the clinical study exams, a subjective questionnaire was conducted at 6 months. The questionnaire consisted of sponsor-developed questions, which regarded visual quality, subject satisfaction, and spectacle usage.
