5 Handy Eye Care Tips for Fall

Published by Lance Kugler, MD on September 27, 2016

Fall is upon us. The leaves are changing, the weather is a bit cooler and crisper, and the days are getting shorter. Fall is a beautiful time of year in Nebraska. To ensure that you enjoy Omaha’s gorgeous fall weather, Kugler Vision has five handy eye care tips just for you!

1. Don’t Closet Your Sunglasses!Fall_Couple_Sunglasses.jpg

Even though the sun may not seem as bright, it’s still capable of damaging your eyes. UV rays can cause everything from mild dryness to permanent vision problems! Remember that even on an overcast, cloudy fall day, UV rays are just as high as they are on clear sunny days. Choose sunglasses with 100 percent UVA and UVB protection, and be sure to wear them consistently when outdoors or driving.

2. Back to School – Don’t Forget the Most Important Exam

Schools offer vision screenings, which are helpful but are not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. Don’t risk having your kids squinting at the whiteboard, getting headaches from having an outdated prescription, or underperforming in school due to blurry vision. Schedule your child an eye exam, also known as an EyeAnalysis at Kugler Vision! We offer the first EyeAnalysis for ages 10-21 free! Start their school year off right. Set them up for success by having them take the most important exam of the year with us– their eye exam!

3. Wash Your Hands FrequentlyHand_Washing.jpg

Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes to help prevent spreading the flu and eye-related illnesses like pink eye. Also, it’s important to always wash your hands with soap and water frequently. Washing your hands helps you stay healthy! It is one of the most important and most simple steps to take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs.

4. Remember Safety Comes First!

Wearing eye protection is often overlooked when doing work around the house or in the workplace. Eye injuries are very common. In fact, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports about 2,000 U.S. workers sustain a job-related eye injury requiring medical treatment each day! Safety experts and eye doctors believe that the right eye protection could lessen or prevent 90 percent of these eye injuries. Remember to wear the proper eye protection at your job or while doing housework, yard work, cleaning, or working in your garage.

5. Avoid Exposure to Allergens

Fall brings pumpkin pie and hot apple cider… as well as airborne allergens like pollen and mold! Many people are allergy sufferers. They suffer through symptoms like red, itchy, burning, and watery eyes. Most seasonal allergies are caused by pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds as well as molds. A few things you can to do help are: driving with your windows up, cleaning your floors, using a dehumidifier regularly, and again washing your hands before touching your face!

At Kugler Vision in Omaha, we care about you and your eye health. Get out there and enjoy everything Omaha has to offer in the fall, but remember to take good care of your eyes – they are the only pair you have!
